General Information

The Burghausen City Archive is the central office for questions about Burghausen's city history. In its function, it archives important documents on Burghausen's town history. The task of the city archive is to store and preserve this written heritage of the city of Burghausen. In addition, the team develops the content of the material and makes it accessible for use.
Interested parties can view the holdings within the framework of the municipal archive statutes upon request. The Burghausen City Archive advises researchers and interested parties individually on their questions and research concerns.

The Burghausen City Archive is also responsible for the publication series “Burghauser Geschichtsblatt”.

archival holdings

The city archive keeps the following documents on the history of the city:

  • Documents from 1300
  • Volumes from 1410
  • Series of invoices from 1440
  • City council minutes from 1616
  • Files from 1557
  • Registries of the formerly independent municipalities of Holzfeld and Raitenhaslach

The collection holdings include:

  • Burghauser Zeitung in the original since the first edition in 1832 with a (digital) collection of newspaper clippings
  • maps and blueprints
  • posters
  • death pictures
  • Official and Law Gazettes
specialist library

The specialist library comprises around 20.000 media units. It includes above all

  • Literature on Burghausen, regional and Bavarian history,
  • Reference books,
  • Historical holdings from the 16th century,
  • so-called "grey literature", such as club, celebratory and company publications and examination papers.

The historical holdings include, among others

  • the publications of the Burghausen Moral Economic Society (“Bavarian Economic House Father”),
  • the library of the Burghausen master builder family Glonner-Reiser (architecture, art, history, natural sciences, fiction from the 17th to the 20th century).

There is also a specialist medical library that came from Matthias Brunnwieser, a doctor from Burghausen who practiced at the end of the 18th century. Some of the books date from the 16th century. Among them are numerous Latin works with natural and philosophical content.

Users can borrow the new media holdings free of charge for two weeks.
