The former ducal town of Burghausen is located on the eastern border of the district of Altötting and thus borders directly on Austria. The city has 34 districts and is the most populous municipality in the district of Altötting.

The city is shaped by its centuries-old history to this day.

In the course of the 20th century, Burghausen developed across borders into the cultural and economic center of the region. The city of Burghausen owes its rise to one of the economically most powerful municipalities in Bavaria to the resident industry, which is part of the south-eastern Bavarian chemical triangle.

The city of Burghausen has gained an international reputation through its cultural commitment. With the "International Jazz Week Burghausen" Burghausen is one of the most renowned jazz festival organizers. The "Street of Fame" in the Grüben of Burghausen's old town commemorates special highlights of the Burghausen International Jazz Week.

Burghausen maintains partnerships with four cities in Italy, Slovenia, France and the Free State of Saxony.

Burghausen has held the title of Fair Trade City since 2012.
