Burghausen's urban area covers 1.985 hectares. The city has a total of 34 districts. They reflect the development history of Burghausen and show how the city has changed from a former salt trading post to an internationally successful industrial location.

The city of Burghausen not only offers the best development opportunities for retail, commercial and craft businesses or gastronomy in its districts. On the contrary, the citizens of Burghausen also find excellent living conditions in the various parts of the city.

Old town

Burghausen Castle and the historic old town characterize the medieval flair of the town of Burghausen.

Anyone who visits the old town of Burghausen will find themselves architecturally in another century. At the foot of the world's longest castle complex, buildings in the Inn-Salzach style dominate the old town. The city of Burghausen, together with other cities that lie on the Salzach, has already submitted an application to UNESCO to become a World Heritage Site. The old town of Burghausen is located directly on the Salzach. The river forms the natural border with Austria, the so-called “Innviertel”.

While industrial plants, the Burghausen campus, modern office centers and rows of shops characterize the cityscape in the new town, the narrow streets and unique monuments of the old town give Burghausen its special atmosphere.

The longest castle in the world towers over the old town. There is a magnificent view of the castle from the town square. There are dozens of ways from the old town to the castle. Hiring a manager for the old town is a result of citizen participation “Future Old Town”, which took place in the summer of 2022. The goal was, among other things, to develop a concept for revitalizing the old town together with citizens, but also schools and users. The position of the old town caretaker is taken over by the urban development funding unterstützt.

With its commercial areas, the city succeeds in creating sustainable market potential for the local groups in the chemical and refinery industry as well as medium-sized industrial service providers and craft businesses.

There are a total of four commercial areas in Burghausen:

Marienberg

The hamlet of Marienberg is part of the town of Burghausen and is located about three kilometers south-west of the town center on a plateau above the Salzach.

It is known beyond the borders of Burghausen because of the pilgrimage church Maria Queen of the Rosary with its two towers. It is considered one of the most beautiful rococo churches in Bavaria.

Neustadt

The chemical plants and the refinery, which are located on the northern outskirts of the city, characterize the image of modern Burghausen. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Burghausen has continuously developed into an important industrial location that has allowed the region to prosper.

In the Neustadt of the city of Burghausen is the majority of schools and day-care centers. Raitenhaslach

The district of Raitenhaslach has belonged to Burghausen since 1978. Raitenhaslach is around eight kilometers outside of Burghausen.

The core of the former parish village is the former Cistercian monastery with the parish church of St. George. The monastery building has been owned by the city of Burghausen since 2003.

The district of Raitenhaslach, with its former monastery complex and its location above the Salzach, is a magnet for tourists and those seeking peace and quiet. Cultural events take place regularly in Raitenhaslach. The academy center of the Technical University of Munich, which has been at home in Raitenhaslach since 2010, also regularly attracts students and scientists to the historical district of Burghausen.
