In 2015, the global community adopted the 2030 Agenda, which includes 17 global goals for sustainable development. There are now further plans in this country: Germany should be climate-neutral by 2045. The Bavarian Climate Protection Act even provides for climate neutrality five years earlier – i.e. in 2040.

Burghausen is aware of its responsibility for the sustainable and future-oriented development of the city. In June 2021, the city council therefore decided to create a sustainability concept. In this way, the city wants to identify potential and different fields of action, set priorities, develop synergies and ensure a systematic approach to the field of sustainability.

The city has formulated a total of six fields of action as a range of tasks:

  • climate and energy
  • Resources and Biodiversity
  • Economy, science, work and digitization
  • education and civic participation
  • Social city and togetherness
  • Mobility

The city has drawn up action sheets with precise target indicators for each field of action. In order to implement the measures as effectively as possible, the city involves all relevant departments and stakeholders.

In addition, the city designs its sustainability concept together with the citizenry, as it affects a wide variety of interests and also affects the living conditions of the residents. The city not only has people in mind who are involved in clubs or are politically active. Rather, she also wants to involve citizens who live in urban society as a “silent majority”.

To this end, she has introduced a citizens' council. This body consists of 54 people who represent the Burghausen city society. From the point of view of the city of Burghausen, participation in the citizens' council or the committee itself represents an instrument of municipal sustainability.
