Sometimes it's the little things that cause problems for the elderly: taking down the curtains, washing them and hanging them up again, mowing the lawn or similar. Some also have to ask themselves the question of how to get to the doctor, the vaccination center or their physiotherapist?

In Burghausen, there are many offers of help and relief for older fellow citizens who live at home: from meal services to volunteer helpers and driving services for senior citizens. In addition, national organizations such as the Johanniter or the Bavarian Red Cross supplement the offers of help and relief.

Anyone who no longer dares to live within their own four walls can spend the last part of their life in one of the three old people's and nursing homes in Burghausen and still remain in their home country.

But there are also a large number of organizations and institutions in Burghausen and in the district that provide caring relatives with advice and support.

Are you no longer so mobile or can you no longer prepare your meals yourself? Do you want to be sure that you can always get help if you fall at home? For precisely these cases, there is a multitude of assistance and support that you can use.

In addition to nationwide providers, there are also service providers in the city of Burghausen whose offers you can take advantage of.

The Bürgerinsel Burghausen is committed to seniors who need help in the household by trying to find helpers for the work that needs to be done.

Anyone who is still fit and healthy in old age naturally lives in their own home. But even with health restrictions, moving is not absolutely necessary. It is often enough to make small conversions that offer senior citizens security and accessibility in their own four walls.

If these measures are no longer sufficient, there is the option of "assisted living". The term "assisted living" generally describes barrier-free, senior-friendly residential complexes with the possibility of being able to claim additional services on demand. Users who live in assisted living are still largely independent.

The housing options available to people in need of care who can no longer live at home depend on the individual case. Of course, the needs and support needs of the person in need of care play a decisive role.

If you or one of your relatives require care, there are many decisions to be made. It is always advisable to obtain detailed information and advice so that you or your family member actually receive the care that is necessary.

Basically, the care sector distinguishes between two types of care: basic care and treatment care.

Basic care includes care insurance benefits. These include, for example

  • body wash
  • Oral care
  • hair and skin care
  • undressing and dressing
  • help with eating
  • help with movement

Treatment care includes medical benefits from health insurance. These services are prescribed by the attending physicians. These include, for example

  • measure blood sugar
  • give medication
  • nurse wounds
  • Insert and change catheter
  • Put on compression stockings
  • administer injections

There are different types of care in Germany.

Ambulatory (home) care

Those who require outpatient care continue to live in their previous environment. Relatives, neighbors, friends or a professional outpatient care service provides the necessary care services. Outpatient care can be combined with day care.

Ambulatory care is available to people who

  • are in need of care - regardless of their age
  • are briefly ill
  • are chronically ill
  • have a disability.

There are several providers of outpatient care in Burghausen.

respite care

If a person in need of care cannot be cared for as usual temporarily, they can take advantage of respite care. Every year, a patient in need of care is entitled to a budget for preventive care from the care insurance for a period of up to six weeks.

Respite care can be claimed by people who

  • are in need of care - regardless of their age
  • are chronically ill
  • have a disability.

There are several providers in Burghausen who take on respite care.

day care

Day care facilities offer help and support to people in need of care during the day. In most cases, people in need of care visit day care whose relatives can only take on the care part of the time. Day care relieves caregiving relatives.

Many day care facilities expand their care by offering exercise and activities. The agreement as to when a person in need of care visits day care is made individually.

Day care can be used by people who

  • are in need of care - regardless of their age
  • are chronically ill
  • have a disability.

In Burghausen there are several providers who offer day care.

Short term care

Short-term care can be considered for people in need of care if, for example, they are not yet or no longer able to look after themselves after a long illness. Short-term care is also an option if the person in need of care is waiting, for example, for a place in a nursing home or for rehabilitation. As a rule, the social service in the hospital organizes a short-term care place for people in need of care.

Every year, people in need of care have a budget available for a stay in an inpatient facility that covers a maximum period of eight weeks of short-term care.

Residential care

If outpatient or semi-inpatient care is no longer an option, there is still the option of claiming full inpatient care. In addition to nursing care, the facilities also offer their residents various employment opportunities.

Full inpatient care can be claimed by people who

  • are in need of care - regardless of their age
  • are chronically ill
  • have a disability
  • need palliative care.

The district office in Altötting offers detailed advice on all aspects of care. There has been a central advice center here for some time.

Around 1,5 million women and men are currently living with dementia in Germany. Evidence of dementia is shown, for example, by

  • the impaired ability to remember things
  • the impaired attention to focus on one thing
  • the impaired language, to communicate in writing and orally or to understand the conversation partner
  • the impaired ability to think and the impaired comprehension
  • the impaired orientation to find one's way around in terms of time and place

People suffering from dementia have increasing difficulties in mastering everyday activities. In many cases, the mental limitations also lead to behavioral changes.

In most cases, the cause of dementia can be traced back to brain disease. The number of nerve cells in the brain gradually decreases. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. However, tumours, infections and injuries to the brain or head can also trigger dementia.

The German Alzheimer Society runs the Alzheimer's telephone. Those affected, relatives and helpers can call here to get answers to questions about dementia.

Prevention is a topic that many people like to avoid. Of course, nobody likes to deal with serious accidents, illness or death. Nevertheless, it is advisable to clearly regulate all important matters and possible emergency situations. This allows you to shape the last phase of your life according to your own wishes and at the same time gives relatives clarity in the event of an accident, serious illness or death.

Basically, there are the following documents for the provision:

  • the Power of Attorney
  • the care directive
  • the living will
  • the will and the contract of inheritance
  • the burial order

Power of Attorney

Whether due to an accident or a serious illness - if a person is no longer able to make declarations or describe his or her will, it is good if a power of attorney is available. The health care proxy authorizes another person of trust to regulate financial and personal matters. A power of attorney can be delegated to more than one person.

It is advisable to put the power of attorney in writing and have it notarized. Legal advice will help if you have any questions.

For more information on Power of Attorney, go to Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection under the heading precaution.

care directive

If a person who is ill or in need of care can no longer regulate their affairs because of their physical, mental or psychological illness or disability, a care directive can come into play. This also applies if the person can only partially regulate their affairs.

With the help of a guardianship order, you can determine in advance who should take on the tasks and decisions that arise. This can concern, for example, health care and asset management.

It is advisable to put the guardianship order in writing. Legal advice will help if you have any questions.

You can get more information about the guardianship order from the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection under the heading of guardianship.

living will

With a living will you determine whether or which medical treatment you want in the event of illness. The living will comes into play when the sick person can no longer express their own wishes and can no longer make decisions.

A living will states, among other things

  • organ donation
  • the extent of resuscitation and life support
  • release from confidentiality

It is advisable to put the living will in writing and have it notarized. Legal advice will help if you have any questions.

You can get more information about the guardianship order from the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection under the keyword Patient Decree.

will and contract of inheritance

Anyone wishing to regulate their estate draws up a will or an inheritance contract. If there is no will or contract of inheritance in the event of death, the statutory succession applies.

A will must contain the author's first and last name, the date and place, and his/her handwritten signature. If you wish, you can have your will drawn up by a notary. A will can be kept at home, at a notary's office or at the district court.

Anyone who wants to regulate their assets with the help of an inheritance contract must consult a notary. An inheritance contract usually regulates the estate of a deceased person like a will.

Lawyers and notaries will answer questions about the will or the contract of inheritance.

Further information on wills and inheritance contracts can be obtained from the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection under the keywords testament and inheritance contract.

burial warrant

The provision for one's own death regulates all the details of the burial of a deceased person. With a burial order, the deceased relieve their relatives by formulating their will, which type of burial and which procedure they want.

It is advisable to put the burial order in writing.

It is often the greatest wish of terminally ill people to be able to spend the last time of their life as painlessly and dignified as possible. Palliative care and hospice care should make this possible.

The palliative care

Palliative care does not cure diseases, but alleviates the symptoms that are bothering the patient. These include, for example, pain, sleep disorders, tiredness, weakness, nausea and breathing difficulties. Palliative care also includes mental support for terminally ill people.

Palliative care is specially designed to ensure the affected people's quality of life for the remaining time.

Palliative care can be outpatient or inpatient. Palliative doctors and nurses look after the seriously ill. Sometimes volunteer helpers, psychologists and pastors accompany the seriously ill patients in the remaining time.

In Burghausen, the Bürgerinsel provides information about the general conditions of palliative care.

The hospice care

Hospices accompany the dying in the last phase of their lives. Hospices create a homely atmosphere for terminally ill people and their relatives and provide medical and nursing care for the seriously ill. The supporting team includes doctors, nurses, pastors and volunteers.

Trained hospice helpers also accompany seriously ill and dying people on an outpatient basis. To do this, they visit those affected at home, in the clinic or in the nursing home.

The hospice association in the district of Altötting advises seriously ill people and their relatives on all questions relating to holistic, individual care and support. The team at the hospice association also advises its clients on the topics of living wills, powers of attorney and the like.
