In the urban area of Burghausen there are extremely large and many industrial and commercial areas. In addition, the area of housing in the city area is growing continuously. Accordingly, the city has the obligation to create compensation areas - and it fulfills this task with great intensity and diverse approaches.

For example, the city of Burghausen is reforesting agricultural land to create site-appropriate mixed deciduous forests, so that the shrubs and trees planted have a minimum width of five to ten metres. The locations, which can be found in the Kappelenfeld and Reichenberger Forst, among other places, are maintained by the team of the municipal garden center.

In May 2018, the city of Burghausen is doing everything possible to convert the Grieß area in Raitenhaslach from Cattle to graze. In contrast to the regularly mowed meadow, a flower meadow that has become rare now thrives there and at the same time offers a habitat for special insects. For example, the striped grasshopper and the leek cricket can be found in the meadow, both of which are on the Red List early warning list.

The city of Burghausen was also active on the site around the former Salzach loop – at the Bergerhof. A few years ago, she upgraded the area in the heart of Burghausen's old town above Lake Wöhrsee for agricultural purposes. Small changes were enough to create fertilizer-free spaces on the grassland area with isolated trees and bushes, in which many meadow flowers can develop well.

Irrespective of whether it is about the internal or external compensation areas in Emmerting, Alzgern or on the Grieß - highly endangered animal species such as the Aesculapian snake, fire salamander or the Yellow-bellied Toad the ideal habitat for their survival.
