Winner of the Natural Garden Award © City of Burghausen

Natural gardens where butterflies, bumblebees, birds and grasshoppers feel at home. Living gardens, which, in contrast to sterile garden green, offer food and habitat for animal species typical of the settlement area such as hedgehogs, goldfinches and hay horses - the Burghausen Environmental Agency awarded the "Garden Prize" in 2021 to natural places in Burghausen.

A design guide with examples from the award-winning gardens is planned for 2023.

If you want to design a garden that is close to nature, you can take up the tips from the Burghausen Environment Agency:

  • Leave part of the lawn as a meadow and only mow this area once in late summer. In this way, many insects and microorganisms find a place of retreat.
  • Plant native trees and shrubs in place of ornamental trees or alternatives from far-off lands.
  • Build a dry stone wall as a retreat for reptiles. Refrain from grouting the cracks.
  • Create small water points or piles of leaves and brushwood.
  • Attach nesting facilities around the house or in the garden.

“The denser the houses are, the more important it is that the greenery all around has natural value”

Sarah Freudlsperger, Environmental Agency

project profile

The Burghausen Environment Agency uses a point system to evaluate the gardens that are registered for the garden awards. The team that inspects and judges the gardens on-site awards points for the number of semi-natural features such as ponds, native trees and shrubs, permeable pathways and plazas, and small animal structures.

To ensure that smaller gardens also have a chance in the competition, there is no prescribed number of such elements. Smaller gardens must also show a certain variety. The maintenance of the garden, for example the handling of spontaneously grown flora, has a significant influence on the assessment.

Objective

With the garden competition, the city of Burghausen wants to highlight lively gardens in the city and support the efforts of the garden owners.

Anyone who would like to take part in the gardening competition should send a completed questionnaire to the Burghausen Environment Agency by 15 May. If you have any questions about the award, you can call +49 (8677) 887-308 inquire.

Funding

In order to make the gardens in Burghausen livelier, the city of Burghausen supports garden owners financially if they replace an existing stone wall or thuja hedge with a deciduous hedge. Hardwood hedges the city is sponsoring are hornbeams at 25 percent and Portuguese cherry laurel at 15 percent of the total cost. For this purpose, interested residents of Burghausen submit photos of the existing stock and the invoice for the newly planted hedge to the environmental agency.
