Species, nature and climate protection, waste avoidance and recycling, sustainable mobility, organic agriculture and gardening, sustainable ways of living and doing business - there are many ways to get involved in a sustainable way.

In 2021, the city of Burghausen offered a sustainability prize for the first time, with which it honored a special commitment to the environment and climate protection. It wants to honor activities that make a significant contribution to the preservation or recovery of a natural environment or to climate protection. The sustainability award is the further development of the plastic campaign of the Burghausen environmental agency.

Whether Burghausen citizens, groups of people, kindergartens, schools or companies - anyone who actively strives for sustainable management or living can apply for the Sustainability Award of the City of Burghausen. A local connection to Burghausen and the region is important to the city.

project profile

The city of Burghausen sees the sustainability award as a supplement to its “Burghausen changed. The world.". With the award, the city addresses citizens of Burghausen as well as schools and companies. The environmental award honors activities that contribute to the preservation or recovery of a natural environment or climate protection.

The activities must have a local connection. The award is intended to serve as an incentive and role model.

Project working group bees from the Gruber school in Burghausen
A contribution to the preservation and recovery of a natural environment

Brief overview:
• Working groups for pupils, mainly in all-day classes; cross-year
• Headed by Robert Redinger, beekeeper from the Emmerting- Mehring beekeeping association
Christian Bruckmaier, Principal
• Responsible city of Burghausen
gfi Passau
• Numbers • 4 bee colonies in the bee village on the school premises
• approx. 140.000 bees
• 16 students in 2 groups

◼ Ecological efficiency / sustainability
• The working group bees is permanent. Every school year, new members from the 5th grades are admitted, so that a
stable number of groups of approx. 16 students is guaranteed.
• A pond was created in the bee village and insect-friendly plants were grown. The work is constantly expanding
and continued. In this way, a biotope with different animal and plant species should gradually develop.
• Students learn to think in larger contexts as they follow bees throughout the year (weather,
Fodder plants in the area, structure and function of an insect colony, view of ecology-nature-environment)
• Honey is understood as a pure and valuable natural product (expenditure on the bees for production, expenditure on the beekeeper for the
Harvest). Pupils learn to appreciate food and gain an awareness of healthy eating.

◼ Locality / Globality
• Bees help to increase the yields of the orchard owners in Burghausen through their pollination
• The same applies to the propagation of native flower species
• With the working group, the Gruber School Burghausen makes a small contribution to increasing the bee population worldwide

◼ Degree of innovation / originality
• Foundation for a school-specific tradition: keeping and caring for bees, obtaining and marketing products such as
Honey and wax according to ecological and species-appropriate aspects, care of the bee village as a biotope

◼ Feasibility / exemplary
• The students are enthusiastic about beekeeping and encouraged to look after colonies themselves. The one designed over several years
Participation in the AG is the basis for solid basic knowledge about keeping and caring for bees.
• School network: Schools with an apiary can exchange ideas closely and be an example for other schools/institutions.
Beekeeping associations and nature conservation groups can complement the network alongside companies or other bodies.

◼ Economy
• Supporters of the AG: Environment Agency of the City of Burghausen, gfi Passau, Parents' Council, Sponsors' Association, companies, private individuals
• The costs for basic equipment are relatively high, but remain manageable.
• The bee colonies are looked after by a beekeeper, some teachers from the school and, of course, by the students themselves
Personnel requirements are regulated.
• The students earn money by selling honey and beeswax products, at least in part
