The city of Burghausen has defined the following guiding principle as part of its sustainability concept for the field of action "Natural Resources and Biological Diversity":

“We assume responsibility for future-oriented municipal and spatial development by planning as space-efficiently as possible. All of us in Burghausen must take responsibility for the protection of the diversity of plants, animals and their habitats and our livelihood.”

The guiding principle gives rise to concrete goals and visions that Burghausen would like to implement by 2030 or 2035:

In addition to economic aspects, we want to build in a socially just and ecologically sustainable manner. This means that in the future it will have to be checked whether a building renovation can take place instead of a new building. Furthermore, we value sustainable materials and long-term flexible building uses.

The City of Burghausen has defined six fields of action for the “Natural Resources and Biological Diversity” field of action. These include:

  • "Green in the City"
  • Sustainability check for construction projects
  • Responsible building
  • drinking water protection
  • Expansion of organic farming
  • Sustainable Sourcing

In order to achieve the goal of "green in the city", the city is planning its competition "Garden Awards" to expand and to introduce an Open Garden Day. At the same time, the city is examining whether, together with the eco-model region, it can offer private individuals advice on how to design their gardens. In addition, the city would like to set an example and examine where it could possibly implement more green in the city.

The employees of the Environment Agency implement these plans. All of these suggestions come from the Burghausen Citizens' Council on Sustainability.

The city has already introduced the sustainability check for building projects. The sustainability check is mandatory for construction and transport projects as well as for property sales and development plans by the city. In addition to a legal and financial assessment, the check should also provide a sustainable assessment. It helps the individual departments to get a comprehensive view of the respective project. The employees present the completed check to the mayor or the city council.

Planning competitions for responsible building are also on the city's agenda. She wants to conduct the planning competitions according to the SNAP methodology. If you want to know more about this methodology, go to SNAP_1_Recommendations-korr.pdf (nach Sustainable Buildings.de) detailed information.

Internal training courses and workshops on energy-efficient construction are intended to expand knowledge within the city on the subject of responsible construction.

The city of Burghausen also attaches great importance to drinking water protection: it wants to take all voluntary agreements for the water catchment area into account. A topic that is also extremely important to the sustainability council.

Training opportunities for farmers and broad public relations work on the subject of drinking water fountains in the city are intended to promote drinking water protection in the city area. In addition to the existing drinking water fountains, the city wants to install more fountains in the city area.

A workshop sensitizes city employees to the area of sustainable procurement. The takes care of the desired expansion of organic farming eco-model region Inn-Salzach.
