Large tree transplant in progress © City of Burghausen

When a new building is to be built or a road widened, old, well-grown and healthy trees often have to give way. An approach that the city of Burghausen rejects. She has the decades-old trees replanted - as far as feasible.

Large tree transplants have been common in Burghausen for many years. The city has already successfully transplanted more than 100 trees.

To do this, a round spade machine first digs out where the tree will stand. Those responsible make sure that the tree has a good water supply for the next four or five years. In addition, the tree must be pruned beforehand to balance the cut roots and the canopy. In order to make transplanting as easy as possible for the tree, the soil of its new location is specially treated.

A mature tree that is transplanted can weigh up to 15 tons. Once it is lifted out, it is immediately taken to its new location. Here the tree is stabilized with the help of wire anchors or wooden pegs. In the following three years, the tree takes root so that the anchoring can be removed again.

"With the large tree transplants, the city receives characteristic trees, ensures sustainable greenery and the trees themselves are immediately available again as natural shade providers."
