The Slovenian town of Ptuj has been Burghausen's twin town since 2001. Ptuj was chosen by the Burghausen eV town twinning association, which was still young at the time, in order to create a connection to the countries of the former Eastern bloc.
Ptuj - Pettau in German - is located in eastern Slovenia not far from the city of Maribor on the banks of the Drava. The river connects the Danube region with the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its geographical location, Ptuj was a prosperous town for a long time thanks to the resulting trade and shipping. Numerous archaeological finds from antiquity bear witness to this.
Ptuj has largely preserved its medieval townscape to this day. In Ptuj there is a castle and two monasteries. The Slovenian city is located in a large wine-growing region. Ptuj is also a carnival town: the traditional carnival characters, the kurents, are part of the intangible cultural heritage. Today Ptuj has about 20.000 inhabitants.
There is a regular exchange between Burghausen and Ptuj. This is how the citizens of Burghausen go to Ptuj for the carnival. Ptuj residents attend Jazz Week. Like Burghausen, Ptuj has a castle festival. There are also regular visits to the castle festivals.
One of the types of wine in the Burghauser Vineyard is an offshoot of a vine from Ptuj.
The Aventinus-Gymnasium Burghausen regularly organizes a student exchange with Ptuj.
Wherever people are friends, where they talk and play, eat and drink, dance and sing, there is always a festival where everything is genuine, informal and heartfelt. With this in mind, we have communicated and exchanged ideas with our friends from our twin town of Ptuj over the past 20 years. And we will do everything to ensure that this remains the case in the years to come.
