Lecture April 25.4.2024, 19.30, Helmbrecht Hall, 21.00:1901 p.m. – 1986 p.m.: “Burghausen’s Mayor August Fischer (XNUMX–XNUMX) and National Socialism”

The historian and research assistant at the Historical Institute of the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, Dr. Felix Berge.

Burghausen. August Fischer was the first mayor of the city of Burghausen from 1930 to 1945. Since 1933 he was jointly responsible for the politics of the “Third Reich” in the city. He helped to eliminate democracy, joined the Nazi Party and joined the SS. He volunteered for the war. Like many of the conservative functional elite, August Fischer continued his career in the Federal Republic and regained office and dignity elsewhere. Who was the man who belonged to a Freikorps in the crisis years after the revolution of 1918/19, was involved in Catholic student politics in the 1920s and finally became mayor of the Weimar Republic? Which aspects of National Socialist local politics, ideology and crimes played a role in his administration? And how did he view his past and the Nazi era in Burghausen after 1945?

August Fischer was mayor of the city of Kempten from 1952 to 1970. In 2021, the city council in Kempten set up a commission for culture of remembrance, which is responsible, among other things, for checking street names. Biographical research was carried out on over 70 people who lived during the Nazi era and after whom streets were named. In some cases, reports were prepared in collaboration with the renowned Institute for Contemporary History. Dr. Berge prepared the report for August Fischer and conducted extensive research on it in the Burghausen city archives. In his lecture he reports on his research on August Fischer during the National Socialist era and on Fischer's look back at his time in office in Burghausen.

The lecture is part of the anniversary program of the Burghausen City Museum, which is celebrating its 2024th anniversary with numerous events in 125.

The next dates are: May 9.5th. In cooperation with the Bavarian Castle Administration, a big family day will take place at the castle with a program for children and young people. For International Museum Day on May 19.5th. There is free entry to the city museum for everyone.
