Lea Draeger “Economic Pope*”
The exhibition runs from April 04th to June 16th, 2024
“My papal system is a laboratory. It examines patriarchal power relations and structures in a playful way.
The system continues to evolve and break its own habits. Initially conceived as a series of “1000 economic popes”, over 8000 postage stamp-sized portraits of popes whose identities are fluid have now been created.
As an almost uncountable legion, the characters play with categories and identities, resist binary classifications and ultimately undermine them.” – Lea Draeger
Ballpoint pen drawings on tracing paper in small format of popes.
They are not portraits of actual or historical popes, but rather the faces and figures of popes as institutional bodies. Based on family biographical material, Lea Draeger's preoccupation with Catholicism and, above all, with hierarchical societies and family structures resulted in the series Economic Popes*.
Each drawing stands for itself in its value and message. In their plurality, Lea Draeger rearranges the works in different tensions and formations, depending on location and space. The individual works become objects in space, whose individual building blocks are only partially visible, and many of them are swallowed up by the violence of the whole.
